You shall not pass!

It became apparent through some comments left on a recent post that knowledge of Brad's new job is not widely dispersed. He started a new job about the same time I started mine - in April- and works in law enforcement now. He is working for a Sheriff's department. More specific than that, I can not be; if you are curious, feel free to ask him personally or via email.

Brad's car has been having issues as of yesterday so he decided to take my car to work. We figured out a plan whereby he would drop me off at my work and then Nate was going to come pick me up on the other end of the afternoon. Well, we went out to the garage to get in my car, and discovered that the garage door opener wasn't working. And for some reason, opening the door manually wasn't working either. Brad tugged and fiddled and pulled...and I thought, "We're going to have to call in to our respective places of work and say that we are unable to come in because we're being HELD PRISONER in our own HOME by a faulty garage door!" Finally, he got it to where he could open it manually and he held it open while I backed the car out. Well, it was a good thing he was there when there was a problem because there's NO WAY that I would have been able to heave that door up by myself. I really would have had to call in to work b/c of my indisposed garage door. I would have sounded so lame. I wonder if that has ever happened to anyone else... It still doesn't work right and we aren't using it until it can be fixed.

I've never been held prisoner by my own house before, but I have been unable to leave due to the inability to close my garage door. Every once in a while one of the magic eyes (or whatever they're called) gets knocked around when the trash is moved from the garage to the curb. When this happens, the eyes can't see each other and, just in case they are being blocked by a small child, the door will not go back down.

So I (gently) smack the eyes around a little, trying to get them back looking at each other.

When purchasing the house, we didn't notice that the arms connecting the sensors to the wall were *already* wrapped in duct tape. I'm guessing the previous owners were not good with their frustrated "just let me leave my house, you stupid magic eyes" anger. Poor little eyes, it's not really their fault. At least I don't poke them with sticks.

Claire that is to funny. I just had the same thing happen to me last week. It was crazy. Then when I finely got out and came back home after work, it would not open and I was stuck outside my house because I had not made a house key for myself yet.

That's cool about Brad's job in law enforcement. It's so much fun.

I'm going to take a great leap and assume the details of Brad's job have to come from him not because you don't know what they are, but because you don't want ex-cons reading your blog and putting two and two together... If that's the case, welcome to the ranks of bloggers who wish to remain anonymous to certain people!

And your garage door story was amusing.

I couldn't open my garage door once because I had backed into it and bent it on my way to the Mother's Day tea that Andrew's class put on last year. Long story, but the short version is that at the last second before calling the school to let my precious firstborn know I would not be attending the program in which he had a speaking part, I was able to get it to go up, just not back down again. I left that for Jeff to discover upon returning home and was on my way. Lame-O!

I had the same thought as Liane. We must share the same highbrow sense of humor.
