I never thought I'd be a hair stylist

The other day I gave Aiden his first haircut because his little mohawky-Tintin-tuft was getting a little unruly. I took some pictures and I just have to share a few of them.

The urge to cut his hair kind of just came on me in the middle of feeding him his first avocado.

Doesn't it look like he has green teeth? EW!

I've never cut anyone's hair before, but I figured that beginning on him couldn't be all that terrible - he doesn't have that much hair to start with. Most of it is in his little mohawk in the front. It's not like he'd get mad at me if I did a bad job. So I guess he's my guinea pig. I'll learn on him as he grows.

I put a dish towel around his neck, got the scissors, wet his hair down, and went to work. Poor thing- I think he was a little perturbed that his mealtime was getting interrupted. And he was having a hard time sitting still because he was trying to figure out what I was doing, which did nothing to make my job easier. "I'm supposed to sit quietly while you are wielding scissors over my head?"

In the middle of it all, I had to stop and laugh and laugh because he looked so funny with his hair combed down flat. I guess I scared him with my hysterical laughter because his lower lip started to pooch out and he began to cry. For after pictures, see Flickr.

Those pictures are phenomenal! So beautiful!! I'm glad you're learning on him when he's this age. My first try was on Davey's hair just a few years ago.... it was not a good first try, but Mama fixed for me :) At least Aiden won't mind what it looks like!

Ha! There wiiiiiiill be cookies! You should know that the next time I use that phrase, and I do use it fairly often, I will have to sing it. And whoever I'm talking to at that moment will probably be very confused and quite possibly worried about my sanity. :)

Aiden's little face is so expressive!! He makes me wonder if expressions are more of a learned or innate thing. I saw a show about expressions...evidently making an expression can influence us to feel that way. (I have used this during tense/sad/scary parts in movies. If I smile I feel much better than if I do a corresponding tense/sad/scared face. Of course the fact that I'm thinking about my expression rather than what's going on in the movie might have something to do with it as well...)

Amy,

Your comment made me remember that sometimes you can figure out what someone else is thinking or feeling if you model their expressions.

Try it...it works! (For example, if you get all bug-eyed and thrust out your lower lip you'll understand that Aiden is wondering where is mother went, and how did this maniac get in here?)

My first guinea pig was Dennis. But I think a baby would be much harder because they don't appreciate or understand what you're doing! I love the little lower lip sticking out...

I've never tried sewing curtains because that would require committing to some sort of decorative idea for my house, which kind of goes against everything we've not worked so hard at for the last 5 years. But I imagine I could figure it out...I'm awesome with the straight seams. It's those curvy ones that give me trouble. But I'll bet (though probably not quite $100) you could do it all by yourself. Curtains are usually just big, hemmed rectangles. The ones with tabs are just big rectangles with littler rectangles along one side. The kind that cover the rod completely are big rectangles with the top folded over. :)

I guess they're never too young to hate being laughed at!! Nice try, though. I recently trimmed Zach's 14-year-old longish hair, because neither of us really trusts the haircutters at the local butcher shop. :D
