The Bull Mastiff

One of our favorite past-times is coming up with hypothetical names for cats. If all the cats we have named suddenly came into existence, the world would be peopled exclusively with cats. One of Brad's latest brainwaves is " The Bull Mastiff." We try to come up with funny situations in which the name would prove ironic or misleading. ( Ex: " The Bull Mastiff likes to jump up in my lap and nestle." )
We differ slightly sometimes on types of names. For instance, I like to come up with quasi-cutsie names like " Baron Von Munchhausen" or "Basil." But for Brad, it's either totally bizarre, like " The Bull Mastiff" or something so ordinary that no one would ever consider naming their cat. For instance, he thinks something like "Gary" or "Phil" would be hilarious.

Another, more exotic, name Brad seems obsessed with lately is Thor. This is not something he has in mind simply for a joke of a cat name, however. He insists that this would be a suitable name if we ever had a son someday. ( No, I am not expecting.) Somehow, all I can see is some sort of Norse warrior, or semi-god. Thor Pass? Doesn't it sound ridiculous? Everyone who thinks this is ridiculous, please leave your comment after this entry. Thankyou.

I was convinced I wanted a cat named Barbara! On the drive to pick up my kitten (the day after your wedding!) I couldn't stop talking about how her name would be Barbara, and how people would be like, "What?" and it would be so funny. But, she didn't look like a Barbara, so she's The Cuteness, which still makes people go "What?" so it's ok...
As to Thor, what if your poor child has a lisp??
"Mommy - my thumb is thor."
"Yes dear - every part of you is Thor!"
"No really, Mom - it hurts... alot!"

Glad you guys are blogging!

Think about his initials...

There is something very satisfying thinking about a cat named Bull Mastiff. What you call him for a nickname?!

Love,

Mom

The Bull Mastiff wouldn't need a nickname, I don't think. Although we could call him "Blastiff" if need be, I suppose.

Thor Pass is most ridiculous! I am loving everybody's blogs! Its a wonderful antidote for homesickness. Its Sabbath for us now- so I am running through my growing list of friend's blogs to see if anybody has posted new things since this morning. :-) I ran across your via Liane's blog (which address I got from Cara Sandford). Yours is one of the funniest!

Thor sounds like a wonderful name for a kitten! That's what you were asking...right?

I've also entertained myself by naming animals. Personally, I think Spike is good for kittens... and you can name the bull mastiff Fluffy. You can even post a sign: "Beware of Fluffy."

Actually, there really is a children's book in which someone names their kitten Thor. I think it's The Good Master or The Singing Tree by Kate Seredy.

It's so much fun to "hear" your voices!
